What is a Vocoder?
A vocoder is a type of sound effect that can turn the human voice into a robot sounding like metallic voice (just like those robots on star wars). They were first developed as a way of disguising the human voice and have subsequently made their way into many modern songs.
The vocoder basically consists of two parts; 1. The Carrier Wave (usually a human voice) and 2. The Modulator (usually an electronic sound generator). For a full explanation and technical description go here.
If your like me and don’t really care about the technical side of things, than just grab a microphone and start recording your voice. Record some lyrics into FL Studio and set these as the carrier wave of your vocoder. Now fire up any generator and use this as the modulator. There you have it some really excellent robotic sounding vocals for your next tune. Vocoders are also great thing to use when you can’t sing properly. Just put your recording through a vocoder and the pitch will be based on the modulator and should sound in tune!
