Sorting .WAV Samples
If you are a sample whore just like me, then you may well need a way of sorting your . wav samples into some kind of useful structure. When I was living in the city, I had a proper landline broadband connection (not this crappy satellite setup I have now) and I used to browse the web and download any sample I could get my mouse pointer on.
My sample folder became huge, or rather a huge mess so I searched around for tips on how pro-musicians store their samples. Eventually I came across an article at Sound on Sound dealing with the exact issue with which I was having. The article has since been moved as I cannot find it, nevertheless I have here a modified version of Sound on Sound’s sample structure that I made to suit my needs.
My Sample Sorting Structure
This is a picture of the folder structure I created to store all of my .wav samples within. As you can see I created a few sub-categories eg. DRUMS and LOOPS and SOUND EFFECTS for ease of use. Feel free to add your own folders or delete some of the ones I have created, after all this is only a guide as to give you some idea of how I store my samples.
Now for the hard part.
Sorting Your Samples
Depending on the size of your sample folder (mine is huge), this step could take you either a few minutes or a few weeks! Open up your favourite music player (winamp or whatever you prefer) and listen to each of your samples one by one. After listening to the sample move the file into the most relavant sample folder.
Once you have completed this painstaking process, you will be rewarded with a neat and organised set of samples to use within you tunes. The advantage being that it will be much easier to find the perfect sound, vocal, drumhit or effect without wasting valuable hours searching through a messy samples folder!
