Quiet PC so you can Hear your Mix

This is my method of creating a cooler and quieter PC for basically no cost.

The fans in my PC were starting to annoy me because they sounded like they were trying to lift up my PC and fly away much like a helicopter :)

A quiet PC is important so that you can hear your music and not your fans! Also so it’s easier to sleep while downloading off the net. A cool PC is important because when I use Fruity Loops I can easily max out my processor by addinq like 8 effects to each sample in the mixer window (even so I have a AMD Athlon 64bit 3000+, 1gb RAM). Of course you want your PC to be running as cool as possible while it is at 100%. (And if it’s not running at 100% then you haven’t even put enough effort into your tune…. chuck in some more pads, add effects, layer the sounds so that they compliment one another and fill out the mix. There you go now you have a need for a cooler PC like me!

Make your PC Quiet

  1. Remove both of the sidepanels from your PC case by unscrewing them.
  2. Get some corkboard tiles from your local hardware shop. (I actually used some corkboard from one of those pin-up boards where you pin photos too.)
  3. Work out how much space you have so that when you put your cover back onto your PC it will not jamm up against anything.
  4. Cut corkboard to the same size as the sidepanels.
  5. Drill 4 holes through the PC case and then through the corkboad to hold it in place.
  6. Insert screws, replace sidepanels, sit back and enjoy a much quieter PC!
  7. Note: Make sure you dont cover any major vents on the computer case with the corkboard.

Make your PC Cool

  1. Cut a hole in the sidepanel of your PC directly in line with the fan which cools your processor.
  2. I had to use a hammer and chisel to cut through the thick metal case.
  3. Get a clean baked bean tin and make sure it is long enough to reach from the hole in the case to the processor fan.
  4. If you a careful like I was you can make the can jamm against the hole in the case and the corkboard (from the previous tutorial) will hold it in place. I dont have anything holding my baked bean can in place and there is no possible way that it can move.
  5. Now your processor can enjoy fresh outside air rather than sucking in pre-heated PC case air.
  6. Your PC will now run 15-20% cooler and the fan will be at much lower RPM.
