How to make good music in Fruity Loops

This is a question that I found on Yahoo answers here http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071013214455AAX6xZG

How to make good music?? I don’t see how to do it?
Artists are so creative sometimes, what is their secret??? Please tell me, I plan to make it my life. So why not learn the tricks of the trade.

This is a hard question that I myself have ask all the time. The first problem with this question (which raises a valid point) is the part “I don’t see how to do it?”. I’m sorry to say that you can’t really “see” music (except with a spectrum analyser of course) but you shouldn’t try too. Music should be an expression of your feelings.

Try this: Fire up your favourite music creational tool (Fruity Loops of course!!! or maybe not….). Get a midi keyboard and if your don’t have one then buy one, borry one, beg for one or steal one (don’t steal mine though!). Plug it in and just go nuts it doesn’t matter if you can’t play. Record individual riffs with one instrument in a Fruity channel then play it back and add another bit. Record the new piece with a different instrument and when it feels right sounding add another riff. Keep building it up untill by adding little bits and pieces untill you “fill out the mix”. This is important because a full mix sounds really pleasing to the ears.

Think about what instruments popular bands use to make their music. Each instrument fills out a different range within the frequency spectrum coming together to create an awesome sounding tune. Trust me, they know how to fill out their mixes. Look up on the frequency ranges of different instruments and try to emulate this within the electronic world of music. Choose sound generators that fit together or try to make all sounds fit together by EQing and shaping them into place. Always try to cut frequencies to make instruments fit together and create clarity and fullness.

There’s no secret formula to making great sounding music. It takes time to understand all the different aspects of sound and how to use them to your advantage. Keeping reading and keep on stuffing around with Fruity Loops. Try not to loop the same thing over and over until 4am in the morning! I know how sweet it sounds at that point in time, but in the morning it will never sound the same. You need fresh ears even if that means packing up in the middle of a tune and coming back to it in a few days time. When you next listen to the tune you will  know immediately what is wrong with it and can fix it up and go from there!

Good Luck :-)
