Distortion is Awesome
If your tunes sound really empty then it’s more likely than not you haven’t been introduced to distortion. Distortion is one of the greatest tricks that I know to turn your tunes over to the darkside.
In the computer world the sounds are too perfect. Take the Fruity 3xOSC for instance, a great little wave generator capable of anything, although without any effects it is way too clean and perfect sounding. This is where distortion comes in and basically messes up the sound and makes it darn dirty and phat sounding. You can use distortion on every part of your tune to a varying degree. I really depends on the type of tune you are making. If you want your tune sounding really soft and perfect (and maybe you do) than you might not use distortion at all. In the world of Drum and Bass, my world, we want that darn dirty crunch of the distortion ripping through the audience and blowing them off their feet!
So what distortion plugins should you use?
Well you could use the Fruity Blood Overdrive that comes standard with Fruity Loops, however I prefer the TK-3Band Disto. The three bands help to fine tune the distortion, just like cutting and boosting frequencies with an equaliser!
